“Out of Place” reveals and repositions what it means to belong. Twenty-eight artists offer an expansive interpretation of the theme— spanning several mediums, scales, and forms, the work featured in “Out of Place” could easily be construed as disparate or fragmented. Yet, presented together, these artists contend with structure, familiarity, and acceptance while pushing the boundaries of what it means to belong.
What does it mean to be out of place? To answer such a question, one must first define what “place” refers to. Place presents itself in the minutiae of daily happenings—a place at the dining table or the placement of a book upon a shelf. More broadly, it is a factor that shapes our identity as we orient ourselves within social, political, familial, or cultural constructs. Indeed, the impact of “place” varies depending on the context.
At its core, “Out of Place” asserts that no context is too small or too grand to be ignored. Rather, this exhibition considers work that is caught in the mundanity of everyday life while allowing viewers to draw connections to phenomena at a global scale. There are glimpses of chaos: a suitcase strewn open amid an airport terminal. There are instances of peculiarity: a human-shaped spine that has been extended and made round from the bones of a deer. There are pangs of loss: the word “DISPLACED” lays across a covered figure. And there are moments of austere calm: a red light that hangs above an open door. In each of these works, and throughout the entire exhibition, the viewer is invited to pause. It is in this pause where “place” and what it means to be “out of place” can be considered.
