Anywhere, Anywhere, I Don’t Know

Sarah Alexander and Sara Fine-Wilson

October 30–November 24, 2019

First Friday Reception: November 1, 6–8 p.m.
Artist Q&A and Video Preview: Saturday, November 16, 3–5 p.m.

In Anywhere, Anywhere, I Don’t Know, Sarah Alexander and Sara Fine-Wilson explore how layered natural patterns and organic forms take on the appearance of landscape, or mindscape, that could be from anywhere. The exhibition includes steel and ceramic sculpture, as well as drawing and painting, that link the natural world, the human subconscious, and conscious responses to circumstances in which we live. As part of this dynamic show, the artists will create a collaborative, site-specific mixed-media installation bridging their two bodies of work.

Sara Fine-Wilson uses gestural forms as a metaphor for the human condition. Forms that undulate, grow, fold, compress, and spin show the feeling of being stuck while still trying to make progress. Dents, tears, and rough edges are evidence of delicacy and awkwardness at the same time, much like the state of being human.

Fine-Wilson is an artist and teacher who works primarily in sculpture. She attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, Massachusetts College of Art, and University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She spent a year as a resident artist at the Worcester Center for Crafts. Her work has been shown in many galleries and museums including Fitchburg Art Museum, Danforth Museum of Art, and Gallery 540 at Urban Outfitters World Headquarters. She currently teaches Ceramics and 2D Design. She works from her studio in Millbury, MA, where she lives with her husband Bruce and dog Arlo. She is a Core Member of Fountain Street.

Sara Fine-Wilson biography

Sarah Alexander’s work is highly detailed, layered, and fluid. She works in multiple mediums, with a focus on drawing and painting. Alexander transforms selected drawings by sculpting them out of steel. Through her current body of work, she explores how form, shape, and subject matter can have entirely different effects when made out of opposing materials – 2D drawing vs. 3D steel forms. Soft, breezy grasses become sharp, menacing blades, yet still they bend and move. Grasses take flight, becoming weightless, winglike blades. Alexander’s drawings come to life and fly out of the pictures and into the gallery.

Alexander is a contemporary mixed-media artist who creates through stream of consciousness, resulting in depictions that appear gravity-defying. She teaches art classes for children and adults and is Studio Manager at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts in Hopkinton, MA. Alexander’s work has been shown throughout New England and abroad, and is published by North Light Books. She works out of her studio in Hopedale, MA and is a Core Member at Fountain Street.
