“Where the Worlds Meet“ features the work of Mia Cross and Daniel Zeese. Cross and Zeese met in 2015 while working as artist assistants, and they became friends, collaborators, and mainstays of each other’s creative practices. Both Cross and Zeese highlight the importance of craft, narrative and imagination. Coincidentally, both artists’ new bodies of work were initially dreamt up during residencies at the Vermont Studio Center. Since that time, each has invented a world in which their work can exist, and “Where the Worlds Meet” explores the intersection of those two places. The exhibition features vignettes from worlds we recognize as well as situations we might not yet understand. Through their respective visual languages, the artists welcome each other into their worlds with new pieces made in response to the other’s work and process.

Daniel Zeese’s new body of work considers empathy in communication through iterating maquettes—proposed scenarios for brief gatherings, interactions and conversations. The type of interchange one has on a bench is temporary, and one is forced to see through someone else’s eyes rather than look into them. Zeese’s “Benches” act as memorials to past and future interactions, and as a tribute to our attempts to alter our perceptions to be closer to whoever may be sitting next to us.
Zeese statement and biography
Mia Cross has been creating oil paintings, sculpture and installation that exist in an imaginary realm that she has dubbed “The Painted Place.” It is a world where people and nature are intertwined and living in harmony. It is peaceful, abundant, lush, and bursting with color. Cross explores each inhabitant’s role there, and the importance and beauty of paint itself.
