BREAKING THE RULES is Fountain Street’s annual core artist exhibition. This year’s theme asked each artist to create a work that involved the idea of breaking a personal or cultural rule. The resulting exhibition generates a space that questions the social role of the artist in regard to establishing and/or challenging cultural norms, as well as the artist’s personal relationship to that role within their own art-making practice. As a figure in cultural discourse, how does the artist function to critique or envision the world differently? How do the rules set up by an artist in their personal practice enable them to succeed, and how do these same rules hold them back? As artists question their own individual aesthetic and conceptual choices, this exhibit navigates the constructed binary of public/private, personal/political, and internal/external. At this particular moment in history, when artists are called upon to make sense of the uncertain, this exhibition interrogates the ongoing complex struggle of self-identity embedded in the term “artist.”
